Service learning this year was the first time i have experienced truly giving back to the community through my own efforts.
It seemed a daunting task: selling fun packs filled with snacks for $2.50 to the general student population; most of whom I have never met. This truly tested my ability to interact with others and being the shy type, this was not easy. However I overcame my fears and managed to gain a generally good response from most students. However, more challenges lay ahead. Negative responses from some students regarding the price and 'value for money' of the fun packs had dampened my spirits. We were trying our best to do our part for the community and putting in all our efforts into selling the fun packs for charity, but some would not care. After some time, I managed to reassure myself and stay positive. Looking on the bright side always lifts one's spirit. I also told myself to not give up, and continue fighting despite the negativity. As sales continued, another crucial element came into play. Teamwork. This meant that I was able to sell a fun pack, get change and return it with great ease and efficiency. Each person in the class had a role to play; some were cashiers while other sold fun packs to students and teachers. With everyone performing their specific roles, our class was like an efficient machine that was able to sell fun packs smoothly.
All in all, service learning has taught me valuable lessons; to be more open, think positively, and the importance of teamwork. These lessons are important and I will surely incorporate them into my life. Furthermore, in the process of learning these life long lessons, I have managed to do my part to help the needy. We should always think of others who are less fortunate than us, rather than those with wealth and fame. To conclude, service learning was a truly great and valuable experience, one that I will cherish for as long as I can.
