The service learning was truly a memorable experience. It was a great opportunity for me to give back to the society. It did put me out of my old self and let me see a whole different version of myself: a better person who has a sense of human compassion, who has the responsibility to provide support for one another and who has a sense of community. The service learning also provided me a platform for working together with my fellow classmates.
In our service learning, we packed some lovely "Gift Packs" consisted of cakes, candies and jellies and sold these at a slightly higher price. Then we sacrificed our Physical Education periods and Recess time to sell them. If you had asked me a couple of years ago if I could ever imagine myself giving up my leisure time for something like this, I would have laugh and think you were stupid and crazy.
Nonetheless, after half an hour, I actually felt good. Running around convincing people to buy, bragging with my friends how great I was and looking at the smile of people were very fascinating. After a while, I realized that I was helping to positively affect someone's live. I took pride in that. Our class did sell a lot of fun packs, far beyond our expectation. It was the result of teamwork and individual responsibility.
In addition, selling fun packs pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and take initiative as there were a lot of people who refused to buy or even yelled at me. It was very hard to convince them. I was discouraged. "That's not your problem, but those people's problem." My classmate, Benjamin Leow's words did make my day.
I would definitely be staying involved in the community in the future. I would always want to be a part of something bigger than myself.
